Not Happy? Here’s A Guide To Finding Joy

There are times you don’t feel like singing, rejoicing, playing, dancing, and having fun (whatever fun means to you)...

Everyone has gone through that period in their lives when you just don’t feel happy. You feel empty, weak, broke, broken, tired, frustrated, and even hopeless.

You lose your sense of purpose and direction. You know you need help but don’t know how to get it. At times, you don’t know what to do, who to reach out to… you just feel lost.

At one point in our lives, we’ve all been in this situation, and as life may have it, we may experience it a couple of times more. See, it’s not a curse; it’s just life (probably trying to pass a message we’ve been ignoring) and no one knows what to expect or what the next few minutes hold. Anything can happen at any point in time.

You know, I think it’s normal to experience those moments when you don’t feel like singing, rejoicing, playing, dancing, and having fun (whatever fun means to you). Those moments you just want to be alone, to think, to wander and wonder, to listen to the silence, and try to rediscover (or discover for the first time) answers to the many questions emerging as the 5Ws and H – Who, What, Why, When, Where, How?

Who am I?

Why am I here?

Why am I facing this many problems?

What am I doing with my life?

What do I do with my life?

What am I living for?

Where am I coming from?

Where am I now?

Where am I going to?

How will I get there?

What do I need?

Who can help me?

Who will help me? …and more questions.

When you’re not happy, it’s easy to suddenly switch to a reflective mode. You introspect to understand why you’re not happy and to discover a meaning to your life. What you want out of life. These are times you embark on a solitary journey and not even your “sweetheart”, “darling”, “BFF”, “pastor”, or family members can be as helpful to you as your spirit and soul talking to you.

As a wise man once said, “To everything, there is a season, and a time to every purpose under heaven: a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to break, and a time to build up; a time to be happy, and a time to be sad; a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance…” (Ecclesiastes 3:1-8).

There’s time for everything, so, if you’re feeling low and down right now, stay with yourself, and don’t lose yourself. Perhaps it’s time to pray and connect with your God and Creator.

“Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know” (Jeremiah 33:3 NIV). Spend some time disconnecting from the world and connecting with the divine. Tap into the celestial frequency of the universe to ignite the spark of your being and find joy. Give yourself time to heal and find that rhythm of peace and joy from within to be a better version of yourself to the world.

I could share with you several Bible verses to read (you’d already know them, so I won’t waste your time) in encouraging your faith if you’re currently going through a rough patch and one of the worst times of your life. But you have to understand that there’s a duality to life, and you must accept and embrace it to enjoy living to its fullness.

Life and death, pain and pleasure, gains and groans, sorrow, and glee… you can think of more, but you get the point. The duality of life!

There are times you just don’t feel happy, and when those times come, know that it’s not strange nor are your enemies playing tricks on you (not necessarily though). In such a time, if talking to God works for you (I think it should), stick to it.

Some fancy the bottle at such a time (I suggest you flee the temptation). A therapist or someone close to chat with could work. Seeing a movie by Mr. Beans or Charlie Chaplin has its place… find what works for you, but don’t lose the human touch.

So, finally, my brethren (in the words of Apostle Paul), let not your heart be troubled in times of adversity, and be content with such things as you have: for He hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. So that we may boldly say, the Lord is my helper… (Hebrews 13:5-6).

Don’t tarry in despair for too long. Let your mourning be turned to laughter, and your heaviness to joy. Rejoice evermore. Pray without ceasing, and in everything give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.
